Tutor initiative at AAU
Examples from study environments
If you have a good example of how you have incorporated the following into your studies, please contact AAU Student Guidance.
What does the tutor initiative at AAU entail?
Social belonging is one of the most important parameters for retaining students. The tutors are the peers of the new students, and for many the tutor will be one of the first and most important official contacts at AAU with whom new students build a relationship. The tutors become role models and have a great influence on the new students' experience of AAU and their studies, as well as the culture created among the new students.
AAU Student Guidance is responsible for the tutoring efforts at AAU in the sense that we host two voluntary educational days, where we equip tutor coordinators and tutors to handle their role during study start. We do this twice a year – a tutor coordinator education (only for tutor coordinators who are paid and have extraordinary responsibilities) and a tutor seminar (for everyone – both tutor coordinators and volunteer tutors).
The effort means that we work closely with study secretaries, study start managers, etc. who are involved with the study start - with whom we hold two annual meetings (one evaluation meeting during Fall and one kick-off meeting during Spring). In addition, there is ongoing sparring with representatives across departments, who aim to provide input for optimizing the tutor initiative, points of attention from the studies, etc.
When recruiting tutor coordinators and tutors as well as planning the start of studies, you as a study can consider, among other things:
- What are the prerequisites for tutors to be able to carry out their tutoring duties in the best possible way?
- How long should the tutoring efforts last? September or maybe the whole semester?
- Make sure to get tutor coordinators and tutors registered for the training days
- To get study start activities approved so that they are as inclusive as possible
A lot of information about how the tutors work can be found on tutor.aau.dk. Here you can, among other things, read about the tools that help tutors and see presentations from this year's tutor educational days.
Make sure that the 'Code of conduct' as well as 'Framework for the use of alcohol during the study start period' and 'Framework for collaboration with external parties' are considered in the study start planning.
