Academic and social activites

Examples from study environments
If you have a good example of how you have incorporated the following into your studies, please contact AAU Student Guidance.
What do the students get out of academic and social events?
Social events can create a closer and more informal tone between professors and students and promote social integration in the programme. Especially students with limited knowledge of the study culture will benefit from social events.
The purpose of the academic event is to increase the degree of research-based supervision by linking the students' project work more closely to the active research. In relation to the retention efforts in the first year, the event can first and foremost create professional links with the programme and its professors.
Social event
- The student association plans and implements a number of events during the first year of study. It should be a mix of academic, social and career-oriented events. One example is the event "VIP-name and Monopolet", which is a panel debate with teachers from the programme, where students have the opportunity to address study-related dilemmas of all kinds.
It is a good idea to have a small back catalogue of topics that would be good to bring into play at the social work event "VIP-name and discussion board" if the students do not have that many themselves. Feel free to collect topics/questions before the event to ensure "fullness" and content.
Academic event
- The programme organises the "Day of Research". Research Day is an event where researchers associated with the programme present research projects that are relevant to the students' project tasks – and subsequently enter into dialogue with the students about possible project ideas at the stands. The event is for the entire education. The event must be scheduled so that it is an integrated part of the problem formulation phase in selected semesters.
- Expansion of the range of academic activities around the programme, such as documentaries, discussion evenings on important subject-relevant issues and involvement in events at relevant organisations. In addition, integration of these events into the students' schedules and ensuring that this type of event is on the schedule within the first two weeks after study start.
If you want to know more
The head of studies is responsible for the academic and the student association is responsible for the social events. Carrying out the tasks are semester coordinators and VIP (for the academic) and student union, tutor/mentor/student counsellor and VIP for the social work.
